A Marin native, Barrett R.P. Schaefer’s practice focuses upon local real estate matters. With a natural interest in both Northern California and the real estate area of law, Mr. Schaefer represents mainly homeowners, landlords, homeowners associations, and property management professionals in and around the Bay Area.
From the earliest times in his career prosecuting and defending lawsuits, Mr. Schaefer has found great success by focusing upon expedited settlements, persuasive argument, and general civility among parties. Among other highlights in his career, he has successfully resolved numerous multi-million dollar and high-profile matters with satisfied clients.
During the dot-com boom early in his career, Mr. Schaefer worked as the sole intern in the legal department at then newly-public auction website eBay. While he enjoyed the experience, he moved and refocused his career to align with greater interests, eventually practicing premises liability law in downtown San Francisco. He ultimately returned to Marin to continue his practice focus and become involved both professionally and personally where he grew up.
Mr. Schaefer is actively involved in the local community. He currently serves as Chair of the Planning Commission for the City of San Rafael and was appointed by the Mayor of San Rafael to chair a citizens’ committee that oversees an $850,000 yearly budget of taxpayer money to help ensure the quality of local libraries (he now serves solely as a committee member). He also serves on a committee that advises the Marin Lawyer Referral Service. Mr. Schaefer has served as both a Board member and President of his homeowners association and has served on the Board of Directors of the Marin County Bar Association, the local chapter of Women’s Council of Realtors, and Buckelew Programs, a local nonprofit with more than 200 employees that helps provide jobs, homes, health and hope to roughly 5,600 clients each year. Mr. Schaefer was appointed to serve on a committee that reported to local authorities about issues involving homelessness and is a former Executive Committee member of the San Rafael Chamber of Commerce.
Mr. Schaefer earned his undergraduate degree from UCLA in 1995 and obtained both a law degree and Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Santa Clara University in 2000. He passed the Bar Exam his first attempt and is a member of both the California State Bar and the Marin County Bar Association. He is admitted to practice before all courts in California and the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Eastern Districts of California. Mr. Schaefer lives in San Rafael with his family.
